White uses the story of an Iroquois who chose to be killed by the French instead of murdering them to detail that on the common ground there is the foreground of European invasion and the background of Indian defeat and retreat. He also relays his message of the middle ground by way of the meeting between the Miami and Mascouten and Nicolas Perrot and his companions, in that he shared how they could not understand each other's religious views. In White's writings we find a single Iroquois wave in Frenchmen, who had plans to do well for themselves in Mississippi. When the Frenchman approached him, he laid aside his hatchet, and proceeded to welcome them.
